A Key Common Space in School Life

The International School of Panama (ISP) is one of the most prestigious educational institutions in Panama, recognized for its academic excellence and its role in shaping future talent. Within school life, common spaces play a fundamental role, fostering community, well-being, and interaction among students.

The cafeteria is one of the most important gathering points on campus, where students from different grades meet and share key moments throughout their day. It is a space for leisure but also for connection, where the school community strengthens through daily interactions.

Aware of the significance of this environment, ISP commissioned DIAZ DIAZ to renovate its cafeteria to improve its operations and transform it into a space that reflects the institution's identity and values. More than just a dining area, the cafeteria was designed to become a dynamic and welcoming environment that fosters socialization and student well-being.

A Transformation Focused on Efficiency and Experience

The redesign of the cafeteria focused on improving student circulation, reducing wait times, and providing a more comfortable and functional environment. To achieve this, a strategic distribution of service stations was implemented, ensuring a continuous and efficient flow. The space was reorganized to minimize crowding, optimize internal logistics, and enable staff to operate more effectively.

Another key aspect of the renovation was the flexibility of the space. Modular furniture allows the cafeteria to be reconfigured as needed, adapting to daily lunches, informal meetings, group projects, and even school events. This versatility means that the cafeteria serves not only as a dining hall but also as a multifunctional hub within the campus.

A Design Inspired by the Natural Environment

One of the most innovative elements of the new cafeteria is the integration of a central tree, which serves as a focal point of the design while reinforcing the connection with nature. This feature brings freshness to the space and enhances students’ sensory experience, creating an environment that invites relaxation and socialization.

Additionally, the use of natural materials such as wood and warm-toned finishes creates a cozy atmosphere that blends seamlessly with the campus surroundings. The combination of natural light, vegetation, and neutral colors promotes a calming environment, positively influencing students' mood and concentration.

Natural lighting was optimized through the incorporation of large windows and skylights, reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day. This approach not only improves the visual quality of the space but also contributes to the project's sustainability by reducing energy consumption.

Open Spaces and Relaxation Areas

The cafeteria’s interior design prioritizes both operational efficiency and student comfort. Lounge areas with sofas and comfortable seating were added, allowing students to relax, study, or socialize outside of meal times.

These open spaces enable the cafeteria to function as a multifunctional meeting point, where students can socialize, work on assignments, or simply unwind. The flexible layout of the furniture makes it easy to adapt the space for various activities, from group meetings to school events.

Optimizing Operations and User Experience

Thanks to the reconfiguration of the space, the cafeteria now accommodates a greater number of students in less time, significantly reducing wait times. The redistribution of service stations has improved flow during peak hours, preventing congestion and facilitating better organization.

From an operational standpoint, the enhanced layout has increased service efficiency, optimizing food preparation and distribution logistics. As a result, the cafeteria has not only improved the student experience but also streamlined its internal operations and boosted profitability for the food service.
